The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
GUYS. It is not all that often that a psychological thriller comes along and totally shock me with its twists but HOLY HANNAH did this book ever take me on a roller coaster ride of crazy. Thank you so much @orionbooksfor sending this one my way.
The suspense in this book is sky high - you know right from the beginning what the crime committed was, but you have no idea why Alicia has been silent every minute of every day since. There is such an incredible amount of slow-burn character drama that just never feels like its dragging, as you are immersed in figuring out the mystery of Alicia's mind.
Alex did amazing work moving between present day and Alicia's diary entries leading up to the event, which peel back layer after layer of what went so wrong to land her in a psychiatric hospital, medicated to high heaven and refusing to make a sound. I so desperately wanted to figure out what happened that I ended up cancelling plans to stay in so I could finish the book.
I won't offer more, because this is a thriller that the reader needs to be able to devour fully oblivious to any hint of what is to come. All I will say is clear your schedule, because once you start its impossible to stop.
The perfect thriller to dive into to pass away the winter days!

Promising to be the debut novel of the season The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive…
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.
Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.
Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....
