Blog Tour Stop!! Apple Island Wife by Fiona Stocker
I’m thrilled to be today’s stop on the Random Things Blog Tour for Apple Island Wife!
There is something incredibly mesmerizing to me about reading the stories of people who honest to goodness just PICKED UP AND LEFT. Those people who decide to just go for it with a new life somewhere else, somewhere unknown, somewhere different. I could devour stories like this all day long, and it was in that mindset that I dove right into Apple Island Wife.
Fiona does AMAZING work bringing Tasmania to life - suddenly I was transported to the warm, wonderful adventure she was on, rather than thinking about being on Day 12 of the Polar Vortex Deep Freeze. This is a story that you can fall right into; I was experiencing the sights and smells and tastes like I had lived them - and I can’t lie, its writing like this that has me wanting to pack up and head out!
What happens when you leave city life and move to five acres on a hunch, with a husband who’s an aspiring alpaca-whisperer, and a feral cockerel for company? Can you eat the cockerel for dinner? Or has it got rigor mortise?
In search of a good life and a slower pace, Fiona Stocker upped-sticks and moved to Tasmania, a land of promise, wilderness, and family homes of uncertain build quality. It was the lifestyle change that many dream of and most are too sensible to attempt.
Wife, mother and now reluctant alpaca owner, Fiona jumped in at the deep end. Gradually Tasmania got under her skin as she learned to stack wood, round up the kids with a retired lady sheepdog, and stand on a scorpion without getting stung.
This charming tale captures the tussles and euphoria of living on the land in a place of untrammeled beauty, raising your family where you want to and seeing your husband in a whole new light. Not just a memoir but an everywoman’s story, and a paean to a new, slower age.
The stories that Fiona shares are so human, and her ability to reflect and laugh about some of the more absurd moments make this entire book read like you are relaxing with a glass of wine and chatting with a bestie. I thought I knew a thing or two about Tasmania, and found myself learning so much more, and subsequently, falling in love with this place I have yet to visit. Fiona makes her community a character in the story, and I feel like I could show up tomorrow and feel right at home, which is to say she has done a tremendous job sharing an honest and loving reflection on this amazing little piece of the world.
More than anything else, I love how Fiona brings stories that happened to her, thousands of miles away in a completely different world than mine and nonetheless I could relate to every story she told. Her ability to tell stories in a way that are human and grounded make this more than just a laugh out loud funny memoir, it becomes that and a love story to these chapters in her life.
I loved every page, and I honestly hope there is a sequel coming because I need more of these stories to enjoy with a hot cup of tea on these snowy winter days.
Be sure to grab a copy of this one my friends, it is the perfect antidote to winter, although be forewarned, it will increase your wanderlust by 100%.
Also be sure to check out the rest of the stops on this awesome tour! I can’t wait to see what everyone else has to say about this one!
