Top 10 2018 Reads!
I have decided to cheat JUST A LITTLE - by using my Top 9 to showcase my Top 10 Reads of this year. Which was near impossible to choose, but these were ten books I FLEW THROUGH, could not put down, and recommended far and wide. (Full Disclosure: Red Snow doesn’t come out until January. But it’s being included as a two-fer. 😉)📚
I love that there were SO MANY amazing books this year. To be honest this started as a Top 18 list, so it was no easy feat narrowing it down. Without further ado (and in no particular order), my Top 10 Reads of 2018! 📚
📚 Educated by Tara Westover - Hands DOWN one of the best books I have EVER READ. The fact that this is a memoir, and that the events of this story ACTUALLY HAPPENED, still blows my mind. I cannot believe it. This will be one of those books I read again and again. I cannot stress enough, if you haven’t read this one, PUT IT ON THE TOP OF YOUR 2019 LIST!
📚 She Regrets Nothing by Andrea Dunlop - This was an ARC of mine from early 2018 and I became immediately obsessed. This is like reading an afternoon soap opera but in book form, and with more drama, and IT IS PERFECT. I devoured this, and honestly have been begging Andrea to write more books with these characters because I want to see what happens next.
📚 Dark Pines & Red Snow by Will Dean - Dark Pines was a book I stumbled upon on Twitter, ordered in from the UK and became OBSESSED WITH. The writing is next level - the way Will describes everything just transports you right into the freezing Swedish forest and you are tasting and smelling and feeling every detail. It is literally a book I read three times this year. AND THEN. Will was gracious enough to shoot me an early copy of Red Snow, which is the second book featuring the amazing lead Tuva - and somehow it was even BETTER than Dark Pines. More delicious (and not delicious) details to devour, more insane characters, more drama. I am hooked. Red Snow is also on my Top 2019 list and we aren’t in 2019 yet. Please. Do yourself a favor and jump on the Will Dean bandwagon with me. Its worth it.
📚 Bird Box by Josh Malerman - By now you have probably watched the Netflix version of this movie that dropped three days ago and promptly crushed a pile of records. So you know why this is here. And you know what? Book is better. Read it.
📚 The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White - This was also an unexpected ARC that was released to celebrate the anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein being published. I didn’t even know how badly I wanted a retelling of this classic until I read this, and let’s just say - this book is UNEXPECTED MAGIC. Get this book. Thank me after. Bonus feature: PRETTIEST COVER EVER.
📚 You Were Always Mine by Nicole Baart - I was thrilled to be on the launch team for this book this year. I loved Nicole’s other work, and no lies, this one blew that work out of the water. This is a legit unputdownable book. There are clues dropped throughout that lead to some WILD twists and turns and I honestly loved every single page. It is clever and heartbreaking all at once. I cannot wait to see what Nicole hits us with next.
📚 The Bankers Wife by Cristina Alger - I had no idea what to expect when I started this, and then it was like a James Bond movie, but with kick ass female leads, on a twisting, turning, backstabbing hunt for truth and OMG I did not set this book down one time. I want this book in movie form. BADLY. If only the producing houses would answer my fan mail about it.
📚 Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens - I casually somehow ignored this when it first burst on the book scene, and then got it as part of a subscription box. I then fell completely into a story so beyond what I was expecting, with such stunning detailed descriptions that I fell totally in love and jumped on the WE LOVE THIS BOOK bandwagon. Everyone should really read this book because its surprising in the most wonderful ways.
📚 The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas - I might have been the last person in the world to jump onto the magic of this book, but HOLY SHIT. Every human being needs to read this book, and every single white friend of mine has had this book gifted, recommended and recommended again to them. Angie Thomas has done something truly incredible with this book that is honest, devastating, real and raw. I bow to the throne that woman needs to sit on - I will follow her anywhere, and that is to her new 2019 release On the Come Up. Also - The Hate U Give movie that is dropping. Just do yourself a favor and if you somehow have also missed this one, get this to the top of your 2019 TBR. You will understand why when its over.
That’s it! As always, all the full review for these books are here on the blog or on my Goodreads account if you want more detail - but I promise you, none of these will lead you wrong!
QOTD: If you HAD to choose - what would be your top read of the year? I know! It’s like Sophie’s Choice! 😂
Merry Christmas Eve friends! 🎄
