The Ever After by Sarah Pekkanen

The Ever After by Sarah Pekkanen

My favorite way to Sunday - coffee // books // socks // snacks // Vinny. β˜•οΈπŸ“šπŸͺ🐢

Can we also chat about what an amazing July pick @saltwaterreads chose?! The Ever After by @sarahpekkanen is completely absorbing, heartbreaking and raw. I love this story - and love Sarah as an author for writing things that reflect the true complexity of relationships. So rarely is a relationship or marriage clear cut, it’s never just good or bad or happy or unhappy. It takes tremendous talent to write that grey area - and Sarah does it beautifully. πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•

The story follows the implosion of Josie’s world when she discovers her husband Frank has been having an affair. Josie sets out to untangle exactly what happened so she can decide what this means for her marriage.

This story is so unique and interesting, as it looks at the shock waves of an affair on a marriage, but with a lead character who chooses to take on this massive trauma calmly and with isolated focus of investigating all the details. I loved Josie, who gets to be both a devastated wife, but also a strong, capable and focused woman. I also loved that this story paints both parties as genuine and flawed humans, rather than stereotyping them as victim and villain.

I have really found a connection with books lately, that paint the world in the grey areas rather than using boring stereotypes and implausible story arcs.  For example, it would be easy to tell the story of an affair and have a hysterical wife, and a husband who is completely detached and remorseless - so I LOVE that this story is NOT that.  Rather, its a story of a woman who can be traumatized, but still function, think and act logically, have a relationship (although fragile) with her husband, and take time to make decisions about the fate of her relationship in an intelligent way.  Its also the story of a husband who did something horrific to his marriage, and wants to grow to be a better person on the other side of that action.

This was what I loved most about the book - it didn't take the easy way out - it dug deep to the roots of a complicated marriage, and found a complicated way back out.

This is a book that will devour you, and leave you rooting for these characters to get a new Happy Ever After. πŸ’•

Thanks (as always) for the great pick @saltwaterreads ! Can’t wait to dive into August’s pick! πŸ’•
